Four leaf clovers, horseshoes, Friday the 13th, going under a ladder, seeing a cracked window… These are all omens that supposedly represent if someone will have good and bad luck in the future. However, as Muslims, we know this is not true and they are all superstitions. We shall concentrate on one of the many superstitions that supposedly bring good luck, the four leaf clover.
The four leaf clover is deeply rooted in western society, whether it be pertaining to 4-H clubs, St. Patrick’s Day, or leprechauns. A main reason that it is supposedly supposed to bring good luck is because of it rareness. A study done showed that out of every ten thousand three leaf clover, there is one four leaf clover. However, there are many false legends that people believe and attribute to the four leaf clover. Among the legends are the following:
1. According to legend, each of the four leaf clovers represent one thing. The first leaf is for hope, the second leaf is for faith, the third leaf is for love, and the fourth leaf is for luck. People normally believe that the three leaf clover (a shamrock) does not bring luck because it does not include the last leaf of uck.
2. In Irish tradition, a three leaf clover supposedly represents the Holy Trinity – The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. If a four leaf clover is found, then the fourth leaf is considered to bring God’s Grace. They also believe that when St. Patrick was trying to teach the Irish people and others about Christianity, he used the three-leaf to help then understand the concept of the Holy Trinity.
3. Lastly, another legend many believe is that when Adam and Eve were told to leave Heaven, Eve brought a four leaf clover as a keepsake to Earth to remember the happiness they enjoyed in Heaven. That is why if one finds a four leaf clover in his / her garden, it is supposedly supposed to bring happiness to the person’s life.
In conclusion, the four leaf clover is something that brings people supposed good luck. In reality, it is nothing more than a weed that cannot affect our lives in any way because everything is predestined by Allah (swt) and nothing happens other than from His permission.
